The Annapurna Circuit has been considered one of the best trekking/hiking trails in the world, and is the classic long distance, high altitude trek in the Annapurna region. The trek is one of contrasts between the green, terraced farmland of the Marshyangdi valley and the semi-arid environs of Lower Mustang. The two areas are separated by the Thorong La pass (5416m), which we must cross on a long day, to reach the sacred site of Muktinath. The temple complex is a pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists and when seen from here the sunrise on Dhaulagiri is particularly striking.
This 14 day variation of the Annapurna Circuit trek follows the same route as the traditional trek but removes the road walking that can now be found on either end of the circuit by taking a jeep all the way to Chame to begin the trek and then finishing in Muktinath where you would then drive back to Pokhara.

Welcome to Nepal! Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel in the heart of Kathmandu. After settling in, take the day to explore the vibrant city at your own pace. Wander through the bustling streets of Thamel, visit the ancient temples and courtyards of Durbar Square, or relax at a cozy café while soaking in the local atmosphere.
This day is set aside to make any last minute trip preparations and meet your guide. After consulting with our office staff about your schedule we will arrange for you to have a special lunch or dinner at a traditional Nepali restaurant, where you’ll enjoy authentic local cuisine. Following your meal, your trekking guide will provide a detailed briefing about the upcoming adventure, covering essential information on the route, altitude, packing tips, and safety guidelines. This is also a great opportunity to meet your fellow trekkers and ask any questions before setting off on your journey
After an early breakfast, we leave the vibrant city of Kathmandu and embark on a scenic drive towards Besi Sahar, the gateway to the Annapurna region. The journey takes us along winding mountain roads, passing through picturesque countryside, terraced fields, and charming villages. As we drive alongside the Trishuli and Marsyangdi Rivers, you’ll get glimpses of Nepal’s rural lifestyle and the stunning Himalayan foothills in the distance.
Along the way, we’ll make stops for refreshments and to stretch our legs, enjoying the changing landscapes as we move closer to the Annapurna region. Upon arrival in Besi Sahar, we’ll check into our accommodation and take some time to relax. This small town serves as the starting point for the trek, and you may have a chance to explore the local markets or enjoy the views of the surrounding hills before we continue our journey the next day.
After an early breakfast in Besi Sahar, we embark on a thrilling off-road journey to Chame, the administrative headquarters of the Manang District. The ride takes us along rugged mountain roads, winding through lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and deep river gorges carved by the powerful Marsyangdi River.
The journey begins on a relatively smooth dirt road but soon turns into a bumpy, adventurous trail, requiring a sturdy 4×4 vehicle. As we ascend, the air becomes crisper, and the landscapes transform dramatically from subtropical hills to alpine terrain, with glimpses of snow-capped peaks like Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal in the distance.
We pass through remote mountain villages such as Syange, Jagat, and Dharapani, where we can witness the unique blend of Hindu and Buddhist cultures in the region. Along the way, we may stop for short breaks to stretch, enjoy tea at a local teahouse, and take in the stunning scenery.
Arriving in Chame (2,670m), we settle into our lodge and take some time to acclimate to the altitude. Surrounded by towering pine forests and dramatic cliffs, Chame offers a perfect introduction to the beauty of the Annapurna region. Get ready—the trekking adventure begins tomorrow!
After a hearty breakfast in Chame, we begin our trek deeper into the Annapurna region, following the Marsyangdi River as it carves through the rugged landscape. The trail gradually ascends through dense pine forests, crossing several suspension bridges that sway gently above the rushing river below. Along the way, we are treated to breathtaking views of Annapurna II, Lamjung Himal, and Pisang Peak.
As we trek higher, the vegetation starts to thin, giving way to a more alpine landscape. The air becomes cooler, and the dramatic rock formations and towering cliffs make for a stunning backdrop. We pass through small traditional villages like Bhratang, where we may stop for a short break to enjoy some tea and take in the serene surroundings.
One of the highlights of today’s trek is the awe-inspiring Paungda Danda, a massive, smooth rock face that rises nearly 1,500 meters above the valley, considered sacred by the local Gurung people. From here, the trail continues with a steady climb until we reach Lower Pisang.
To enhance acclimatization and enjoy even better mountain views, we take the higher route and continue to Upper Pisang (3,300m). This picturesque village offers stunning panoramic views of the Annapurna range, and its traditional Tibetan-style houses and monasteries create a peaceful, spiritual atmosphere.
After settling into our lodge, we can explore the village, visit the monastery, or simply relax while taking in the breathtaking Himalayan scenery. Rest well—tomorrow, the trek continues towards the heart of the Manang Valley!
Waking up in Upper Pisang, we are greeted by the golden morning light illuminating the snow-capped peaks of Annapurna II and III. After breakfast, we begin one of the most scenic and rewarding sections of the Annapurna Circuit as we make our way towards Manang.
Today, we have two route options: a lower, easier trail through Humde or a more challenging but breathtaking high-route via Ghyaru and Ngawal. We take the high route, as it not only provides superior acclimatization but also offers some of the most spectacular views of the Annapurna range.
The trail ascends steeply to Ghyaru (3,700m), a traditional Tibetan-style village with stone houses, prayer flags, and jaw-dropping panoramas of Annapurna II, III, IV, and Gangapurna. From here, we follow a scenic ridge trail to Ngawal (3,660m), where we stop for a well-deserved rest and perhaps a cup of tea while admiring the magnificent surroundings.
Descending gradually from Ngawal, the landscape becomes drier, marking our entry into the rain-shadow region of the Annapurna range. The terrain starts to resemble a high-altitude desert, with cliffs, sparse vegetation, and ancient chortens (Buddhist shrines) dotting the landscape.
After a few more hours of trekking, we reach Manang (3,540m), a lively and culturally rich village nestled in a stunning valley beneath towering peaks. Manang is a key acclimatization stop on the trek, offering various lodges, bakeries, and even a Himalayan Rescue Association clinic.
Upon arrival, we check into our lodge and take some time to explore the village, visit the ancient monasteries, or enjoy a well-earned pastry from a local café. With another day in Manang ahead for acclimatization, we can fully soak in the beauty of this high-altitude haven.
Today is a crucial acclimatization day in Manang, helping our bodies adjust to the increasing altitude before we continue higher into the Himalayas. Rather than resting completely, we take on an acclimatization hike to Ice Lake (Kicho Tal) at 4,620m, a challenging yet rewarding trek that provides stunning views and helps our bodies adapt to the thin air.
We start early, leaving Manang behind as we ascend steeply along a rugged trail. The path winds through alpine meadows, past grazing yaks, and along rocky ridges with breathtaking views of the Annapurna range. As we climb higher, the air becomes noticeably thinner, and we pace ourselves, taking breaks to hydrate and enjoy the incredible scenery.
After approximately 3-4 hours of uphill trekking, we reach Ice Lake, a serene glacial lake with crystal-clear waters reflecting the towering peaks of Annapurna III, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, and Chulu East. The peaceful atmosphere, surrounded by prayer flags fluttering in the wind, makes it a perfect spot to rest, take photos, and soak in the grandeur of the Himalayas.
Following some time at the lake, we begin our descent back to Manang, which takes around 2-3 hours. The downhill walk feels easier, and as we return, we pass through yak pastures and ancient chortens, catching different perspectives of the valley.
Back in Manang, we spend the rest of the day at leisure—exploring the village, visiting the Himalayan Rescue Association for an altitude talk, or simply relaxing with a warm cup of tea. This acclimatization hike prepares us for the higher altitudes ahead as we continue our journey toward Thorong La Pass in the coming days.
After an acclimatization day in Manang, we continue our ascent into the high-altitude landscapes of the Annapurna Circuit. Leaving behind the bustling village, the trail climbs steadily through dry, windswept terrain, marking our entry into the more remote and rugged parts of the trek.
As we trek, we pass through Tengi, a small settlement above Manang, and gradually make our way along the Marsyangdi Valley, following the river’s path as it narrows into a gorge. The air becomes thinner, and the scenery transforms into barren high-altitude meadows with sparse vegetation, scattered juniper bushes, and grazing yaks.
After a couple of hours, we reach Gunsang (3,960m), a small village offering stunning panoramic views of Annapurna III, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak. This is a great place for a short tea break while soaking in the incredible mountain vistas.
Continuing onward, we cross a wooden bridge over the Ghyanchang Khola and ascend gradually toward Yak Kharka (4,020m). True to its name, meaning “Yak Pasture,” this area is home to grazing yaks and offers spectacular views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks.
Upon arrival, we settle into our teahouse and take the afternoon to rest, hydrate, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Given the increasing altitude, it’s important to take it slow and allow our bodies to adjust as we prepare for the higher elevations ahead. Tomorrow, we move closer to the Thorong La Pass!
Today’s trek takes us higher into the thin mountain air as we make our way from Yak Kharka (4,020m) to Thorong La High Camp (4,880m), the final stop before crossing the Thorong La Pass. This section of the trek is shorter in distance but involves a significant altitude gain, so we take a steady and measured pace to allow for proper acclimatization.
Leaving Yak Kharka, we gradually ascend along a rugged trail, passing through Ledar (4,200m), a small settlement with a few teahouses where trekkers often stop for tea. The terrain becomes rockier, and the lush pastures of the lower valley give way to barren, windswept landscapes.
As we climb higher, we cross a wooden bridge over the Kone Khola and follow a narrow, exposed trail along the mountainside. This section requires careful footing, especially if the path is icy. Eventually, we reach Thorong Phedi (4,540m), a small but busy resting point at the base of Thorong La Pass. Many trekkers choose to stay here for the night, but to improve our chances of a successful and easier pass crossing, we continue to Thorong La High Camp (4,880m).
The final stretch from Thorong Phedi to High Camp is a steep and challenging ascent, zigzagging up a rocky slope. Despite the effort, the reward is worth it—the higher altitude offers breathtaking views of Gundang, Syagang, Thorong Peak, and Khatungkang.
Upon reaching High Camp, we settle into our lodge, hydrate well, and rest early. The air is noticeably thinner, and the temperatures drop significantly, but the excitement builds as we prepare for tomorrow’s early morning trek over Thorong La Pass (5,416m), the highest point of our journey!
Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek as we cross Thorong La Pass (5,416m), the highest point of our journey. We start early—before dawn—to take advantage of stable weather conditions and avoid strong afternoon winds at the pass. Equipped with headlamps and warm layers, we begin our ascent from Thorong La High Camp (4,880m) in the freezing pre-dawn air.
The trail climbs steeply at first, zigzagging over rocky and snow-covered terrain. As we gain altitude, the air becomes increasingly thin, making progress slow and steady. We take frequent breaks to catch our breath and stay hydrated while soaking in the surreal alpine landscape. After about 3-4 hours of gradual climbing, prayer flags fluttering in the wind signal our arrival at the Thorong La Pass (5,416m).
Reaching the top is a moment of triumph! The panoramic views of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Mustang ranges are simply breathtaking. A large sign marks the pass, where trekkers celebrate, take photos, and absorb the immense beauty of this high-altitude crossing.
From here, the descent begins—a long but rewarding journey down to Muktinath (3,800m). The initial descent is steep and can be tricky, especially if there’s snow or ice, so we tread carefully. The landscape gradually shifts from barren, glacial terrain to the brown, windswept hills of the Mustang region, where the Tibetan plateau influence becomes more evident.
After about 3-4 hours of descending, we arrive in Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. This vibrant town is home to the famous Muktinath Temple, where natural gas flames burn continuously above a spring, symbolizing the elements of earth, fire, and water.
After checking into our lodge, we can explore the temple complex, visit ancient monasteries, or simply relax after this demanding yet unforgettable day. Having crossed Thorong La Pass, we now transition into the drier, arid landscapes of Mustang—a whole new side of the Himalayas awaits!
After completing the challenging Thorong La Pass, we begin our journey back to lower altitudes with a long but scenic bus ride from Muktinath (3,800m) to Pokhara (822m). The road takes us through the stark, windswept landscapes of Mustang before gradually descending into the greener valleys of the Annapurna region.
The first part of the journey from Muktinath to Jomsom (2,720m) is a bumpy, off-road adventure through the Kali Gandaki Valley, known for its unique, desert-like terrain and deep river gorge. Along the way, we pass through Kagbeni, a picturesque village with ancient Tibetan-style houses and prayer flags fluttering in the wind.
From Jomsom, the road improves slightly as we continue toward Tatopani (1,200m), a small town famous for its natural hot springs. Here, we might stop for a short break before continuing on. The route then follows the winding Kali Gandaki River, passing through lush forests, terraced farmlands, and traditional villages like Ghasa, Dana, and Beni. As we descend, the air becomes warmer, and the dramatic, high-altitude landscapes transition into a subtropical setting with waterfalls, banana trees, and vibrant greenery.
The final stretch is a smoother ride along a paved highway, leading us into the lakeside city of Pokhara, a stark contrast to the rugged mountains we’ve left behind. Upon arrival, we check into our hotel and enjoy a well-deserved rest. Pokhara offers a relaxing atmosphere with its stunning Phewa Lake, cozy cafés, and breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre peaks—the perfect place to unwind after an incredible trekking adventure.

You can rent a rowboat and paddle around the lake, enjoying the calm and the stunning scenery that surrounds you. Some cafés also offer yoga and meditation sessions, which can be a perfect way to rejuvenate after your trek.
For those with a bit of time, consider visiting the International Mountain Museum, which offers fascinating exhibits on the history of the Himalayas and mountaineering, or explore the Gurkha Museum to learn about Nepal’s famed soldiers.
As the day winds down, enjoy a sunset walk along the lake or head to the Sarangkot Viewpoint for a panoramic sunset view over the mountains, with the lake sparkling below.
In the evening, you can enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the lakeside restaurants, choosing from a variety of cuisines, from authentic Nepali dishes to international options.
